COZY CREEK PRIMITIVES

I'm a self taught artist who was born and raised in Bucks County, PA, and now live in Colts Neck, NJ (hopefully to return to PA one day with my husband and fur babies!). I have been running my shop Cozy Creek Primitives for over a decade! Here in my little home-based shop, I value quality over quantity. I take my time and put lots of loving attention to detail into every original One-Of-A-Kind piece of art I create, along with plenty of imagination, uniqueness, and whimsy! I don't have anyone working with me or for me (well, except Scamper, the rather sizable Siberian Forest Cat I hired as my Production Oversight Manager). I create each and every doll, every stitch, every detail from start to finish by myself. I don’t use professional lighting, backgrounds or camera tricks to photograph my creations; they are never touched up; what you see is just what you get! My photos show my dolls in normal, every day backgrounds and regular home lighting conditions. I want you to see what they’ll look like in your warm and cozy home, not in a sterile and cold studio setting. I use only high quality materials to create my art. I make sure that my items are solid, sturdy and well constructed. I realize that my items aren't just a decoration for one season, or one holiday. I know they will be brought out year after year, or on display every day of the year. Some will be given to loved ones and special friends as gifts or even handed down to children and grandchildren... they become part of a family and a home, so I make sure each one is very special. I use only non-toxic, U.S.A.-sourced materials in the creation of my art and nothing that I use has a chemical odor. Chemicals bother me so I know they must bother others as well. The only scent my dolls will have are the light, pleasant, heart-warming smells of coffee, tea, cinnamon and vanilla. I use only hypoallergenic stuffing and all of my items are created in a completely smoke-free and clean environment. DISCLAIMER: Every piece of art I create has to first receive Scamper's "Kitten Paw Print of Approval" before it enters my shop for sale! Scamper loves to hang out on my work table to supervise and help with everything I do! Every piece of art is signed and dated by me, then stamped with a little paw print to represent Scamper! I enjoy knowing the items I create with my heart, here in my home surrounded by the love of my family, will be treasured by my customers as a part of their own homes and families! God Bless, Wendy Marro

On 'Black Friday' this Jack Frost Snowman is Pure Christmas Sweetness

Now that the Thanksgiving gratitude and feasting has slipped into yummy leftovers (here at Cozy Creek we even share some leftovers with the local wildlife...deer, foxes, Mr. Groundhog under the supply shed, the raccoons begging for a bit of meat off the turkey bones...), it's time to get back to the tasks at hand for the Christmas season.  Making his debut today is "Christmas Season Jack Frost."

This Christmas Jack Frost Snowman's head and arms are made of muslin which have been stained and aged, his sweet face was hand painted. He has black bead eyes, rosy cheeks and a cinnamon coated dried carrot nose.
His long stocking cap and scarf are red flannel with white snowflakes. The cap is trimmed in fur around his face and is decorated with vintage style Christmas greenery and red berries and has a large rusty jingle bell on the end. His scarf also has a rusty jingle bell, greenery and red berries.
His body is a GENUINE ‘Jack Frost Sugar’ sack (an sugar factory shipping cloth sack; not a print or reproduction).
Snowman holds a beautiful handmade quilted Christmas Ball ornament with an old fashioned Santa in the center!

Lighting the Way - Deep Snow Vintage Snowman

Every once in a while the snow here at Cozy Creek in Christmasland can really pile up and we mean really pile up.  Think northern New York and Pennsylvania Great Lakes lake-effect snow, you know, the kind where it looks impossibly deep.  Now we can't have anyone losing their way, can we?

Wow!  The snow is up to Mr. Snowman's waist and that's where things can get a bit dicey.  Being the warm-hearted soul he is, Mr. Snowman doesn't want anyone in Cozy Creek getting lost in such a deep coat of the white stuff.  Besides, he promised Santa to deliver a special Christmas tree ornament.  So he bundles up (I know, but even a snowman likes to look snuggly), puts a candle in his lantern and off he goes.

This terrific 'lil fellow would make a perfect shelf sitting ornament where space is at a premium.  Visit the Cozy Creek shoppe on Etsy for him and all his current pals.

Temperatures Fall as the Holidays Draw Near...MR. SNOWMAN, GRAB THE SKATES

Well an unusual pre-Winter Arctic chill has sent the temperatures here at Cozy Creek Primitive plunging well below freezing.  The whole gang here knows what that means: Scamper Pond has frozen over!  Although normally it's a stream-fed two-acre pond where local kids go fishing in the summer, the Cozy Creek crew looks forward to the cold months for just this reason: ice skating!!!

Well, Scamper Pond isn't terribly deep to begin with and freezes over rather easily.  Mr. Snowman dutifully went out to the Pond at sunrise and found that the ice was already a good ten inches thick and even strong enough to hold Wendy's Chubby Hubby.  He burst into the workshop to tell everyone today's lunch break would be a half hour longer, so everyone could eat a sandwich, grab a steaming mug of hot chocolate and head out to Scamper Pond for some early season fun on the ice.

T'was the Night AFTER Thanksgiving

"T'was the night AFTER Thanksgiving, when all through the house,
Every creature was busy, even the tiniest mouse.
Santa and all his helpers were so filled with glee,
For the holy time of Christmas was drawing nearer, you see.
Tho' outside the weather had a pre-snowstorm mist,
Santa was warm by the fire going over the LIST.
So many girls and so many boys,
Had all been so good there were so many toys!

Sometimes the crew here needs to take a time out during the run-up to Christmas with so many orders to fill.  It's a lot of fun to relax with a cup of hot cocoa and sort through this new 1000 piece puzzle from Thomas Kinkade Studios.

What the Christmas Mice Have Built!

Mice are quite the industrious little critters.  They celebrate the approach of the Christmas season with the same degree of happiness that the Big People do!  They've decided they can bring a snowman to life just like the Big People; it just take a bit more ingenuity, owing the the fact that they're on the tiny side to begin with...

So it takes a sled and the work of a lot of little tiny paws to get the parts of Mr. Snowman just right.  But after a week of diligent effort, their hard work is rewarded by a snowman they can be really proud of and that equals anything the Big People can do, as the Cozy Creek Primitives shop owner and artist has discovered to her delight!
On finally finishing their hard efforts, here we see the happy mice singing the refrain "There must've been some magic in that old felt hat they found, for when they placed it on his head...."

The wonder of what small woodland creatures can do when they decide to contribute their own effort to Christmas should never be underestimated!

NEW CHRISTMAS DOLL! Vintage Jack Frost With Quilted Ornament

Everyone knows that snowmen are sweet creatures and when your body is made from a vintage Jack Frost sugar sack, that only serves to drive the point home even more!

This jaunty fellow is holding a quilted ornament depicting a snowman in the Winter and he comes warmly decorated for whatever Old Man Winter may dish out this year, with a warm scarf and a whimsical bell cap that looks like it might be a wee bit too long for him.  Either way, he's ready to play!

A Hallmark Mystery Surprise for the Cozy Creek Cats!

Yesterday, while Hubby the Shipping Manager was off on his appointed trip to the good folks at the U.S. Post Office with various and sundry primitive Christmas dolls and snowmen (where he's known as the "Christmas Doll Shipping Guy"), he stopped into the Hallmark store in the plaza.  This past weekend, another hundred or so collectible ornaments were released, and hubby (and Mrs. Cozy Creek Wendy...) are suckers for anything cat-related.  Scamper and Poofy are so super-diligent in their roles here at Cozy Creek that spoiling them more often than not is the rule of the day.

It so happens that for 2019, Hallmark has released so-called "Mystery Boxes."  (No not Scooby-doo, that's for another post...)  The box as purchased is seen below.  You either get a blue or orange tabby cat playfully hanging from a Christmas ornament ball, but the trick is that the ornament itself is sealed inside a black opaque bag inside the box to prevent selective choice by peeking and cheating.

Well, combining something to surprise Mrs. Cozy Creek and the cats for Christmas is something hubby can't pass up.  So he selected a box off the shelf from the few remaining and after handing a few bills to the cashier, eagerly tore into the box like Charlie Bucket opening the Wonka Bar with the Golden Ticket in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Lo and behold, here was the result:

A blue-ish-grey tabby clinging to a ball!  Mrs. Cozy Creek and all the cats heartily approved.
MYSTERY SOLVED...and now back to making the Christmas dolls.

Cozy Creek Busy Season Means PLENTY of Cat Naps

Supervising production in a busy place like Cozy Creek Primitives can be very tiring, especially when you're a nice big, soft forest cat used to taking your fair share of naps during the day.  Hopefully Mommy won't notice when you grab your favorite stuffed mouse and crawl inside a stuffing box lined with soft packing paper for just a few moments....

Here we see Scamper taking a break and you can tell it's a great nap because he's blissed out and in the upside-down position called the "kitty cat belly hug."  He's dreaming of all the treats he and his little sister Poofy are going to get because they're sooo helpful to Mommy when she's making the Christmas dollies and snowmen!

Stylin' Boots are a MUST Have for a Snowman!

Just because you're made from snow doesn't mean you have to go out in bare snow feet if you're a snowman.  Mr. Booty Snowman hops around just fine in his red boot, leaving a very intriguing trail of prints in the snow wherever he goes!

In fact, his red woolen boot keeps all of him nice and snug (yep, we leave out warm, because as a snowman, well, you know...).  His birchwood slice hat provides the perfect place for a cardinal and chickadee to share a cozy nesting place for the Winter as well.

GUEST POST FROM QUALITY CONTROL: Scamper and Poofy

Greetings from the folks (or more properly, the cats) at production oversight and quality control, Scamper and Poofy.  As authentic Siberian Forest Cats from the frozen wastelands of Northern Russia, we know a thing or two about ice and snow!  That's why the good Lord gave three (yup, three!) coats of fur to keep us nice and toasty when the snowflakes fly.

And though yes, we put the 'dorable in adorable, we take our jobs here at Cozy Creek Primitives very seriously.  As long as the treat jar is within sight, not a snowman, elf, or gingerbread creation leaves this little factory without our stamp of approval!
We see how Mommy crafts each and every doll with loving attention to detail, even occasionally drafting daddy into the role of shipping manager with his big noisy SUV, so we take our jobs VERY seriously.  Nothing leaves here that Santa himself wouldn't approve of.  MEOW!!!

Mr. Snowman Back in 1710

Back in 1710, folks still had to do their Christmas shopping, including festive decorations and toys for the children, even if they were SNOW children.  Mr. Snowman has obviously found a real bargain of an old-fashioned red sled, festively decked out with some greens and berries.

He's also returning from some Christmastide shopping for greens, pine cones and some candy canes to make the snow house festive (just like Mrs. Snowman likes it to be...).  Mr. 1710 is fully suited up for the cold weather and would make a delightful addition to any home's Christmas decor.

Wafts of Gingerbread in the House Welcome a New Doll

Now that October's right around the corner and Fall has officially started, a very noticeable change begins to settle over everything.  Leaves on trees begin to turn shades of red, russet and gold.  Mornings start off with a crispy chill that whispers for the comfort of a cup of coffee (or tea, as you please...).  This is a perfect morning for the back door to crack open a bit and who should be there announced by the sweet scent of gingerbread but Holly the Gingerbread Girl™.

Clutching her favorite dolly and vintage-style candy cane, this little sweetheart is sure to grab your heart as well!  You can even still see the little marks on her legs and arms where she laid on the baking sheet getting ready to make her big entrance just in time for Autumn.  Stop by the shop below and see this adorable girl now.  Great weekend everyone.

A Classic Smell of Christmas Past - Gingerbread Maple

Yankee Candle® has been producing a variety of wonderful household scents for years now; each one capable of evoking a time or special memory.  Today is devoted to the Yankee Candle® now-retired original Gingerbread Maple scented candle.

Sadly, this particular scent, Gingerbread Maple, went away for several years and was resurrected in a different scent with vanilla-cream colored wax (but using the name 'Gingerbread Maple').  The candles as displayed are now only occasionally found of eBay and if you care to pay the prices some people are asking for a wonderfully amazing and rare whiff of comforting nostalgia, by all means do!

Mr Vintage Gets His Candles Ready!!! Primitive Handmade Snowman Wreath

As September rolls onward (we call September here at Cozy Creek Primitives 'the phantom month' because it seems to slip by without being noticed, just like Casper the Friendly Ghost, (but that's a topic for another blog post), the days slowly become shorter.  They're not really too big on electricity in Snowman Land, so our Mr. Plaid Snowman is carrying his trusty little candle to light the way.

Mr. Vintage Wreath is ready to dress up your own home with that warm golden feeling that evokes the formal approach of Fall.  He's available by clicking either link below!

Old World Blown Glass Elements

These days, a variety of ornaments adorn our beloved Christmas trees.   For some folks, (including us sentimental types at Cozy Creek Christmas), There's a special type of Christmas tree ornament that tends to warm our hearts like no other can, and these are the class ornate, blown-glass ornaments produced and sold by Old World Ornaments™.

These ornaments, like this Santa Claus blown-glass figure, speak to a gentler time in our world, when the hectic pace of modern life was for a while, replaced with a gentle sense of wonder at the beauty, goodness and color of a special symbol of the holiday season, the ornately decorated Christmas tree.

Mr. Vintage Snowman Buys a Vintage Christmas Tree

Mr. Vintage prefers his Christmas trees with a decidedly rustic, old-tyme charm.  He's gone to the special Christmas tree lot and picked out one that perfectly suits his fancy.

Mr. Vintage also prefers his Christmas tree to be standing on a vintage sewing bobbin stand; he thinks it's more authentic that way.  New-fangled stamped metal just won't do, dontcha know!

Both Mr. Vintage and his detachable stand-alone Christmas tree (only produced as a set; not sold separately) are ready to dress up your own home with that decidedly homey feeling that evokes Christmases gone by.

Keeping a Light on for Santa...

When off to a Christmas party with your other snowman / snowlady pals, it's sometimes easy for us humans to forget that although they're made of snow, that doesn't count for much if ya get lost in a snowstorm.  Snowpeople also have to have a way to see through a heavy snow, too, ya know!

This little fellow's got his latest bright LED candle technology hidden inside his warm, cheery Christmas lantern decorated with an equally happy red cardinal chirping a happy holiday carol.
Outfitted in a cheery Christmas coat, matching hat and black cuddly scarf adorned with cheery snowflakes.

AND THE FIRST CHRISTMAS TREE OF 2019-20 GOES UP!!!

Yes, the title is all caps and that's usually considered 'shouting!'; however, in this case it's completely justified.  It's Labor Day 2019 here in the USA and at Cozy Creek Christmas Shoppe, that means the first of the formal Christmas trees goes up.

Although the decorations and ornaments haven't been put up yet, nor the Christmas Village and train (but that will be the topic of a special, separate post all its own, as hubby jealously guards anything having to do with Lionel Trains!), the Cozy Creek Snowmen standing guard approve heartily already, as can be seen by their smiles.  Stay tuned!

Mrs. Pumpkin Wins First Prize at the Grange!

Mrs. Patty Pumpkin took her new custom primitive quilt to the Grange this past week and entered it in the quilting contest.  It was her first time ever entering the contest, but she had high hopes for her colorful creation.
Obviously her hopes were justified when the prize committee awarded her First Prize for her colorful Autumn creation!  The mix of happy jack 'o lanterns and and Fall colors certain caught their eye and it will catch yours as well.  She's perfect, along with her matched quilt, to light the way home for all the trick-or-treaters coming to your door this Fall!  A happy variation on a time-honored theme!

March of the Seasons: Here Comes Halloween

Here we go; the seasons roll onward and the next seasonal favorite to approach is Autumn and Halloween!  Spotted on the store shelves today for the first time is that old Halloween standby, candy corn.  Lore has it that candy corn was invented in the 1880s by a Wunderlee Candy Company employee named George Renninger. Wunderlee was reportedly the first to produce the candy, followed by the Goelitz Candy Company (now the Jelly Belly Candy Company), which has been producing the tri-colored candies since 1898. Back then, the cooking process was done by hand: a sugar and corn syrup-based mixture was cooked into a slurry (a semi-liquid mixture) in a large kettle, dumped into buckets called runners, and men dubbed stringers walked backwards, pouring the hot concoction into a tray of molds in the shape of corn kernels.

Candy corn has been primarily associated with autumn because of corn’s link to the fall harvest, and it seemed to become a Halloween standard in the 1950s when people started handing out individually-wrapped candy to trick-or-treaters, according to The Atlantic‘s series on the history of Halloween candy. That said, candy corn was also nicknamed “chicken feed” in the 1920s and sold in a box with a rooster on the front, not to mention a 1951 advertisement called it great to eat all year round, the magazine points out.

The Village Under the Christmas Tree!!!

A warm tradition among many families in this age of constantly-looking-at-a-little-screen is putting a village underneath the Christmas tree.  While it's easy enough to go to a store and purchase buildings and little figures to go with them, it's much more rewarding to make your own village (not to mention that your pocketbook won't feel the sting of a Department 56 price tag).  There are many online vendors that sell no-fire ceramic buildings that are ready-to-paint.  (Unless your hubby is a master model craftsman, Lionel trains are perfectly acceptable!)

Below is the tree we've come to call the "Christmas Wonderland Tree!
(This was in 2011 before we repainted and redecorated the house!)

And here are a couple of buildings from a craft store that we've painted and put under the tree along with some figures from LeMax (good quality and less expensive than Dept 56):

Paint with acrylic paints from the craft store, painting one or two of these buildings in the run-up to Christmas and then having them as treasured family memories is a treat the entire family can enjoy!

Awesome Pumpkin Spice Latte at Home

The moment thoughts of Autumn start to come around, we rush to our local FourBucks....(oops, you know what popular coffee chain I mean 😉) and order a pumpkin spice latte. But why fork over an Abe Lincoln when you can have it right there in your own kitchen? This recipe is simple and you probably have most, if not everything, you need to make it at home right now.

This recipe can be ready in about 10 minutes.

INGREDIENTS:
2 cups milk (dairy or non-dairy)
2 tablespoons canned pumpkin puree
1 to 3 tablespoons sugar, to taste
1 tablespoon real vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice, plus more for serving
1/2 cup strong hot coffee
Whipped cream, for serving

Start by heating milk of your choice, pumpkin puree, and sugar on the stove. You can use whole, 2 %, skim, or dairy-free milk. Coconut or almond milk would be great as well.  Then add vanilla, pumpkin pie spice, and strong coffee. The mixture gets divided between two mugs and it’s time for whipped cream.  Enjoy!!!

...And So It Begins.

Well, now that Summer will shortly be starting it's slow amble towards the cooler season of Fall, little signs are starting to appear that mean the cooler breezes of Autumn aren't that far off.  Mr. Sugar Maple Tree is starting to show what his colors will eventually all be turning to.

Thoughts of swirling showers of Maple leaves, cider, and brisk walks through the local park begin to fire the imagination of the creative minds here at Cozy Creek Christmas.

A Christmas Tree for July!

The steady, but inevitable march towards our beloved holiday season continues and here at Cozy Creek the elves and cats can sense the approaching excitement.  This year, Santa recommended a second Christmas tree with multicolor lights placed where the local neighbors can appreciate Cozy Creek's dedication to the holiday.

While not exactly representative of the tree we'll be putting up at Cozy Creek, ours will be festooned with bright colored lights as well, plus many cherished, delicate Old World blown glass ornaments (that Scamper and Poofy would LOVE to get their little paws on, but can't for the obvious reason that blown glass & feline curiosity really don't play well together!!!).   More to come!

HO HO HO!!! An Early Box from the North Pole (via Balsam Hill)

Well, now that it's officially less than five months to our favorite holiday, our cats scamper and Poofy were making a big ruckus by the front door.  When we rubbed the sleep out of our eyes and looked outside, there was a big box that said "Made at the North Pole."  Well, we brought it inside and look what we received !

The note inside said:
"The elves and I thought that since the crew and cats at Cozy Creek have been so diligent in honoring the true meaning of Christmas, here's an early gift by way of the Balsam Hill Company."

"You must set it up as quickly as possible to release the Christmas magic!!!"

Heat Wave got Anyone Thinking of Autumn Yet?!?!?

Well, with the last week's heat wave now finally broken across much of the country, it's got a lot of folks minds turning to cooler times and a more comfortable frame of mind.  Summer is nice, fun and all, but when the actual temperature reaches 100 degrees, I think we'd all agree that the 'fun' factor quickly turns into "is the air conditioning working???

HOW DOES THIS LOOK???

Yes folks, let's not forget that the beautifully cool days of Autumn are not too far off.  Cooler days, cooler nights, bright swirling showers of maple leaves, old wood bridges.  Keep faith, folks, the oppressive heat with not last and before you know it there will be frost on the pumpkin!

Santa's Wedding Was on Christmas Eve

Most folks associate summertime with wedding because of the festive flowers in bloom.  But most people don't realize Santa Clause was married to Mrs. Claus not in the summertime, but in Winter and on Christmas Eve.

According to the most authoritative source available, the 1970 Arthur Rankin Jr. / Jules Bass' Christmas TV movie special, Santa (aka 'Kris Kringle') married the town teacher Miss Jessica somewhere around 1460.  Because at the time Kris was a wanted man due to the evil shenanigans of the Burgermeister Meisterburger, Santa had to get married in the woods.  But it's well known that due to the hard work of the little woodland creatures and the converted heart of the Winter Warlock (whose prayer to the Lord for one more tiny miracle was made on that special night when Ultimate Love came into the World), no cathedral ever looked more grand!

Frosty Sees a Heat Wave Coming!!!

Yup, even here at Cozy Creek Christmas, July and Summer bring the inevitable heat wave.  Temperatures here in the Northeastern U.S. are projected to exceed 100o
degrees Fahrenheit in the next few days and we all know snowmen don't like to see that thermometer climbing and getting all red.

So when Frosty started to sweat and get all melty, his pal Karen found him a refrigerated boxcar on the choo-choo heading up to the North Pole where it's all chilly, but some of us don't have that option.  Be sure to keep your air conditioning set to a reasonable temperature like 76o because if the temperatures get close to the top of the thermometer, keeping a twenty-five degree difference in between outside and inside can really tax your cooling.  Keep pets indoors, as they can quickly suffer heat stroke.  If you have to be outdoors, a hat, light clothing and plenty of water with electrolytes should be on hand.  You don't want to end up a puddle on the floor!

FUN FACTS: Santa's Reindeer Donner and Blitzen

We all know the words from the start of the beloved Christmas song "Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer": 'you know Dasher and Dancer, Prancer and Vixen, Comet, Cupid , Donner and Blitzen..."  We sing their names happily at Yuletide every year, but do we really know where the origins of their names came from?

That's right, Thunder and Lightning!  Why did Santa name these whimsical creatures after some of nature's most powerful Summer displays?  That's to show that the reindeer leading his pack of Christmas animals are absolutely fearless!  So when anyone, especially children ask why their names are that way, you can truthfully say that Santa wanted to show that like the mighty storms of summer, nothing can stop his reindeer from helping deliver gifts and honor the birthday of baby Jesus.
