COZY CREEK PRIMITIVES

I'm a self taught artist who was born and raised in Bucks County, PA, and now live in Colts Neck, NJ (hopefully to return to PA one day with my husband and fur babies!). I have been running my shop Cozy Creek Primitives for over a decade! Here in my little home-based shop, I value quality over quantity. I take my time and put lots of loving attention to detail into every original One-Of-A-Kind piece of art I create, along with plenty of imagination, uniqueness, and whimsy! I don't have anyone working with me or for me (well, except Scamper, the rather sizable Siberian Forest Cat I hired as my Production Oversight Manager). I create each and every doll, every stitch, every detail from start to finish by myself. I don’t use professional lighting, backgrounds or camera tricks to photograph my creations; they are never touched up; what you see is just what you get! My photos show my dolls in normal, every day backgrounds and regular home lighting conditions. I want you to see what they’ll look like in your warm and cozy home, not in a sterile and cold studio setting. I use only high quality materials to create my art. I make sure that my items are solid, sturdy and well constructed. I realize that my items aren't just a decoration for one season, or one holiday. I know they will be brought out year after year, or on display every day of the year. Some will be given to loved ones and special friends as gifts or even handed down to children and grandchildren... they become part of a family and a home, so I make sure each one is very special. I use only non-toxic, U.S.A.-sourced materials in the creation of my art and nothing that I use has a chemical odor. Chemicals bother me so I know they must bother others as well. The only scent my dolls will have are the light, pleasant, heart-warming smells of coffee, tea, cinnamon and vanilla. I use only hypoallergenic stuffing and all of my items are created in a completely smoke-free and clean environment. DISCLAIMER: Every piece of art I create has to first receive Scamper's "Kitten Paw Print of Approval" before it enters my shop for sale! Scamper loves to hang out on my work table to supervise and help with everything I do! Every piece of art is signed and dated by me, then stamped with a little paw print to represent Scamper! I enjoy knowing the items I create with my heart, here in my home surrounded by the love of my family, will be treasured by my customers as a part of their own homes and families! God Bless, Wendy Marro

In the Meadow....the SNOWMEN are Decorating a Tree!

It's a twist on a favorite line from a Christmas carol, but hey, that's what the snowmen on this farm are up to!  Obviously, there was a generous helping of snow that fell last night and they're just taking advantage of Mother Nature's raw materials to create some art for themselves.

As the old windmill spins away in the yard and the people inside haven't even started to make the morning coffee, these mischievous snow creatures decided "why should those people in the warm box have all the fun?!?!?"  So they've taken it on themselves to make one of the trees look a little more festive before Farmer Jones comes out to feed the animals.

It's A Major Award!!!

This weekend at Cozy Creek we finally got one of those small reminders of what has become over the years a symbol of Christmas family Americana and the occasionally hectic nature of the holiday.  That's right, we gave in and got a MAJOR AWARD!

This is a small ornament version of the tacky lamp prize won by Ralphie's father (always referred to in the movie "A Christmas Story" as 'my old man...').  Here at Cozy Creek Christmas, it doesn't represent the conflict in the movie, but rather a whimsical and lighthearted way of reminding ourselves that sometime you shouldn't take things too seriously as the preparations for the holiday start to come into sight.

Weekend Fun Time at Cozy Creek Christmas

Here at Cozy Creek Christmas, it's never all work and no play, especially for the cats Scamper and Poofy.  Don't let their gentle, sweet faces fool ya; underneath is some serious plotting and scheming.  Witness Saturday afternoon's primary activity:

Just one little problem; there's a very thick Andersen Window between these two 'lil schemers and their intended prey.

Besides, all is not as it seems.  Poofy and the little squirrel fellow have a bit of a mutual admiration society going on when Scamper isn't looking.  They actually enjoy flopping out and staring at each other through the glass.  Mr. Squirrel gets very relaxed on the wide warm porch decking and 'lil Poofy does the same thing on the back of her comfy couch (that Mommy and Daddy somehow think is really theirs).

A Hard Day's Work...

Up here at the Cozy Creek Christmas Shoppe, every one has their job to do, even the cats.  Scamper is Production Manager and 'lil Poofy is in charge of Quality Control before hubby takes the carefully wrapped packages off to the Post Office.  Production Manager for Scamper is hard work for a cat and he takes his job VERY seriously, inspecting the creation process every step of the way.  This includes going to far as to lie on top of the material to make sure Mommy has picked the right one.

Then let's not forget Quality Control.  'Lil Poofy has to inspect each and every creation before it is shipped and like her big brother Scamper, there's nothing frivolous about her activities.   Her tiny little nose goes over all the creations once Scamper has put his seal of approval on them (and yes, it's an actual seal) and only then does it get snugly packed for shipment to its lucky new owner.

THAT, folks, is why plenty of nap time is built into their day.  A good nap is critical to production and quality!

Chubby the Snowman.....

Today's new creation from Cozy Creek Christmas is a whimsical 'lil guy we call "Chubby the Snowman," with apologies to Frosty.  This delightfully happy fellow is just waiting to brighten up someone's shelf or mantle with some Christmas spirit and happy vibes.

This little fellow is ready to light the way on Christmas Eve and all your other late Autumn and Winter nights with his happy little long-lasting LED golden warm lantern!  His smile speaks to happy fellowship and a warm spirit, despite being made from snow!

Santa and Scamper Taking a Summer Nap...

Today's post features a lighthearted look at how Santa takes advantage of the all-too-brief Summer lull before his (and our) busy season kicks into high gear here at Cozy Creek Christmas.  Santa stopped by to take a short gander at what's up here in Wendy's Christmas Creative Center (or as the cats put it "where all the Christmas magic happens!").

And as sure as night follows day, Santa just sat down in his favorite chair for a 'quick' cup of coffee (he said "hot chocolate makes me too sleepy; too much to do...").  Well, so much for the best of intentions, because as soon as the jolly old fellow sat down, Scamper saw his chance, meowed 'oh boy!' and jumped onto his favorite nap spot) aside from up in the master bedroom suite on Mommy's pillow.

I'm not going to wake them up....are you?

"Not a Creature Was Stirring, Not Even a...Mouse?" (Decorating the Christmas Tree)

This creation is inspired by the 1823 poem made famous by Clement Clarke Moore, "A Visit from Saint Nicholas" that starts off with "Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse..."  Well, with apologies to Mr. Moore, here at Cozy Creek Christmas, we beg to differ.  It's been a long tradition at Cozy Creek Christmas that when the time come for decorating trees, the mice do much more than stirring.  With an informal Christmas truce in place with our cats Scamper, Poofy, and Patches; the little mice happily go about decorating  their own Christmas tree in the wee hours before dawn.

Each little member of the mouse family has their own job to do, whether it's stringing festive lights, hanging ornaments or gently placing a star on top of the tree and as you can see in the picture, they truly do it with the greatest of care.  This wreath, a whimsical tribute to Mr. Moore's poem 'Twas the Night Before Christmas' is ready for purchase in our online store and it's on sale right now with free shipping.

"In the Meadow We Will Build a Snowman... (Summer Fun!?!?)

Well, with the temperatures supposed to hit the upper 80s and lower 90s this week, along with the inevitable thunderstorms here in the Northeast, Cozy Creek Christmas thought we'd give you a glimpse into what's on the minds of our favorite holiday mice.  no surprise, it's Winter fun!!!  Here's one of our favorite pieces with the little critters engaged in one of their favorite run-up to Christmas playtime activities called "In the Meadow We Will Build a Snowman..."

Yup, Mr. Snowman doesn't quite have his act together just yet, but the industrious little mice will see to that shortly.  🐭⛄  All these and more are available to ship during the Cozy Creek Christmas in July sale.  Shop now!

The Simple Primitive Joys of Summer

Summertime is often associated with fun, but hectic, activities where we can occasionally get lost in the details and lose sight of the big picture...  "Did we pack the kids' pool floats???"  "You only bought the SPF 45...I wanted the SPF 50 sunscreen!!!"  "These hot dogs are half TURKEY!!!"

Let's try to hearken back to a simpler time and I won't make it tough.  Let's just go back to those simpler days before the Internet, real lemonade with (gasp!) a scoopful of real sugar, of a pile of Kingsford charcoal in Uncle Ned's grill turning to an even ash gray, and American cheese melting off a hamburger patty and dripping a sizzlin' drop down into the hot coals creating a brief flareup.  Let's not forget the post cookout marshmallows browning on a twig and then pulling the gooey crisped brown shell away from the warm center!

Or perhaps we just hop into the car and take a drive into the country.  After all, it's not that far away; just a short drive for most of us.  Cows and horse meandering in a field, a still windmill on a muggy day, or a winding country road you just haven't been down in a long time.  All of these things are little memories to treasure when we're bundled up four or five months from now with the visions of sugarplums dancing in our heads...

I could go on, but you get the idea.  Take each Summer day as something precious to be savored.  It's the little primitive joys.

Never too Soon to Think of the Harvest....

Here at Cozy Creek Christmas, we're always mindful of the seasons and now that the Fourth of July has come and gone, we're looking forward to what's on the horizon.  Mr. Pumpkin serves as a cheery reminder that the fields are full of crops bursting up and getting ready to ripen for picking, in this case a crop of happy pumpkins!

Her at Cozy Creek Christmas, we hope you're enjoying the long weekend holiday with friends and family.  Please be sure to take a moment to stop by my shop where items such as the above painting are on sale, with free shipping (but only for a limited time!)  Have a great weekend.

Happy Independence Day! (...and proper pet precautions)

Today, as you enjoy the holiday festivities, be mindful of the fact that loud fireworks (skyrockets, firecrackers, M80s...etc.) are not fun for household pets.  Keep in mind that an M80 explodes with the audible volume of 1/4 stick of dynamite.  To pets, fireworks are an annual declaration of war, and the amusements we so treasure sound like a constant barrage of artillery aimed right at THEM.

So if your the caretaker of a cat....(or dog), have some consideration for your animal companions.  Instead of setting off explosives near your home, go to a local municipal display.  Regardless of what you decide to do, be sure to leave some soothing music playing at a comfortable audible volume.  There are actually free hours-long animal and pet relaxation music playlists available on YouTube designed to calm down a stressed out animal.

GUEST POST: Hubby the Shipping Manager

"Thirteen years ago the dream began...."

Hi folks, Rob here, AKA 'The Cozy Creek Shipping Manager' and more importantly, the lucky husband of Wendy.  Today I asked Wendy if I might post a few words on the 'ol blog.  Not many people are blessed to meet a soulmate that makes them realize the expectations you had for a spouse weren't nearly high enough.

It was June 30th, 2006 that I stood on the altar of an ornate Gothic shrine church pictured above on the Jersey Shore in Point Pleasant Beach next to a priest and my best man.  Slowly walking towards me was the vision of an angelic princess in white; the most stunningly beautiful vision of womanhood I had ever beheld in my life.  It's not often that my heart skips a beat, but that day, it did; Wendy in her wedding gown literally took my breath away.  I still sit back and reflect on how 'new' it still feels, thirteen years later.

I'm here to say 'thank you, Wendy' for making me realize the best years of my life began that day.  For the rest of my life, in the words of Frank Sinatra, "You Will be my Music."

I love you.

Cool Yumminess for a Summer Heat Wave

Other than the words 'air conditioning,' the first thing to go through your mind during a summertime heat wave is "what can I have to cool me off???"  Well, here at Cozy Creek Christmas, we're one step ahead of you.  Time for some summer beach parfaits...

Let's dive right in (from delish.com):
Ingredients:

4 cups cold milk
boxes vanilla pudding mix
1 1/2 cups crushed graham crackers
rainbow sour belt candy
10 teddy grahams
1/4 cup melted white chocolate
10 Pez candies
10 flower sprinkles
10 Life Saver gummies

Directions:
  1. In a large bowl, combine milk and vanilla pudding mix. Whisk for 2 minutes, then let stand until thick, 3 minutes more.
  2. Into a clear plastic cup (or a small mason jar), add a layer of vanilla pudding. Top with an even layer of crushed graham crackers. Repeat to make 4 layers.
  3. Stick a tiki cocktail umbrella into each cup, then decorate as desired.
  4. To make a sun-tanning teddy graham: Cut rainbow sour belt into small rectangles a little bigger than the size of the teddy grahams. Lay on top of the parfaits then place a teddy graham on top.
  5. To make candy flip-flops, use a toothpick to drop melted white chocolate into the center of a Pez candy. Place a flower sprinkle on top. Repeat with remaining Pez and flower sprinkles.
  6. To make a floating teddy graham, gently stretch a Life Saver gummy and place a teddy graham in the center.

Guest Post: It's a Heat Wave!!!!

Yep, Summer's officially here and that mean's temps in the 90s for the last few days up here in the Northeast.

"I bet it's not this hot back in Siberia, Mommy!!!"

Hi folks, it's Poofy the Cat here and if you're a Siberian Forest Cat like me or my rambunctious big brother Scamper, it means hangin' out near an air conditioning vent when there's no Siberian snow to be had.  Sometimes having three coats of hair isn't all it's cracked up to be.  Poofy also reminds us that if you're a human-type cat, be sure to be sensible; use sunscreen and drink plenty of water if you have to be out and about, either enjoying the sunny heat or having to work in it.  If your animal companions have to be outside as well, be sure to limit their time in the heat and make sure they have plenty of fresh water to drink, too.  She just told me "that's OK, Mommy, you and daddy can go work in the garden and I'll just 'supervise' from right inside here..."

A Little of the Good Lord's Art!

This is the time of year when all the careful work that's gone into your garden comes to light.  The warm morning sun coaxes the flowers out of their buds to reveal their glory to the Wold.  Here we have day lilies with a backdrop of an exotic perennial flower, a dusky pink astilbe reaching its cone-shaped delicate blossoms to the sky.

Day lilies are especially beautiful, with such a fleeting elegance.  Plant a few around your gardens and watch the riot of spontaneous colors erupt!  Just keep in mind that, if like us and have cat companions like our Scamper and 'lil Poofy, that lilies of all sorts are toxic to cats, so keep these IN the garden and enjoy them at a distance.  Have a great day.

Home Fireworks Time!!! (and Safety)

Many states have recently relaxed local laws regarding the purchase and use of retail home fireworks.  Fireworks can be a lot of fun and add a lot to holiday celebrations, especially if you're having family and friends over.  They add an element of excitement and fun to any outdoor summer celebration and where once upon a time you had to often travel out-of-state, they're now very conveniently available in local supermarkets, big box retailers and even national roadside convenience store chains!

Along with their convenience comes the requirement for responsible use.  It's no longer just sparklers and smoke snakes doodling along the ground, but full-fledged Roman candles and skyrockets guaranteed to fly as high as 100 feet or higher!  With this in mind, here are some common-sense guidelines for their use, if fireworks are legal where you live, keep these safety tips in mind:

  • Kids should never play with fireworks.  Sparklers can reach 1,800°F (982°C) — hot enough to melt gold.
  • Buy only legal fireworks; illegal fireworks usually go by the names M-80, M100, blockbuster, or quarterpounder.
  • Always use fireworks outside and have a bucket of water and a hose nearby in case of accidents.
  • Steer clear of others setting off fireworks.
  • Never throw or point fireworks at someone, even as a joke.
  • Don't hold fireworks in your hand or have any part of your body over them while lighting.
  • Point fireworks away from homes, and keep away from brush and leaves and flammable substances. The National Fire Protection Association estimates that local fire departments respond to more 50,000 fires caused by fireworks each year.
  • Light one firework at a time (not in glass or metal containers), and never relight a dud.
  • Don't allow kids to pick up pieces of fireworks after an event. Some may still be ignited and can explode at any time.
  • Soak all fireworks in a bucket of water before throwing them in the trash can.
  • Think about your pets. Animals have sensitive ears and can be very frightened or stressed by the Fourth of July and other big celebrations. Keep pets indoors to reduce the risk that they'll run loose or get injured.
Fireworks are meant to be enjoyed, but you'll enjoy them much more knowing your family is safe.  Better, yet, attend a public display.

Fly an Aged, Vintage-Inspired American Flag This Year

The American Flag, Stars and Stripes, Old Glory....whatever you decide to call it, is displayed with pride this time of year.  Here in Monmouth County, NJ, the flag and the American Revolution hold a special place in American history.  It was in nearby Freehold that the Battle of Monmouth took place in June 1778, where General Washington was first acclaimed "Father of His Country!"  In honor of that momentous event, let's do a vintage-style tea-stained American Flag.

Here we have the thirteen star flag known as the "Betsy Ross Flag" and recreating it is easy-peasy.  First, obtain a cotton Revolutionary War Flag, (not nylon, as nylon, though durable, will not hold any sort of tea-staining).  Give it a wash and allow to only partially dry.  Brew up, in a pot large enough to hold the flag completely submerged, a strong tea mix using at least 30-45 regular-sized tea bags.  Gently submerge the flag completely and allow to soak anywhere from two hours to overnight.  Stir ever so often to even out the coloring.

To set the tea, soak the stained flag in two parts vinegar, one part water and tablespoons salt.  Soak for 15-20 minutes, rinse in cold water well, hang dry and press with an iron.  You're now ready to fly your vintage-inspired Flag  in the coming weeks.  (Note: tea staining cotton isn't really permanent, so be sure to protect the flag from rain, as prolonged exposure will eventually rinse the tea stain out and fade the look back towards white.)

Yummy Fourth of July Fun!

Scamper the Cat reminded me that July 4th is only a week and a half away and he wanted me to post a yummy three-bean salad with a kick, so here we go!  This dish is sure to please both the burger & wienie grill crowd in your house and the vegetarians too; so let's get right into these spoonfuls of awesome...

We're using cannellini beans, kidney beans, and garbanzo beans in this salad, but you can just as easily swap 'em for the traditional mix of cooked green beans, wax beans, or black beans.  Prep the onion first and soak the chopped onion in a  small bowl of water to take the edge off the onion while you prep the other ingredients.  Note: the Tabasco sauce lends a good 'kick' without being to too hot and you can substitute the Blair's hot sauce if you're really feeling adventurous  ;-)~
  • Prep time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: Serves 4 to 8

Ingredients

  • 1 15-oz can cannellini beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 15-oz can kidney beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 15-oz can garbanzo beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1/2 red onion, chopped fine (about 3/4 cup), soaked in water to take the edge off the onion
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped fine (about 1 cup)
  • 1 cup loosely packed, fresh, finely chopped flat-leaf parsley
  • 1 teaspoon fresh finely chopped rosemary
  • 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (more or less to taste)
  • 3 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • OPTIONAL: 1/2 teaspoon of Tabasco® brand sauce or any of Blair's various hot sauces (beware, because Blair's is firecracker hot!!!)

Method

1 In a large bowl, mix the 3 different types of beans, the celery, onion (drained of soaking water), parsley, and rosemary.

2 In a separate small bowl, whisk together the vinegar, sugar, olive oil, salt, and pepper. Add the dressing to the beans. Toss to coat.
3 Chill beans in the refrigerator for several hours, to allow the beans to soak up the spicy zestiness of the dressing.

This one's crowd pleaser, so don't hesitate to double up on recipe quantities if you're bringing something to a cookout next week!

From Tiny Kitten to Cozy Creek Christmas MANAGEMENT!!!

So hard to believe that it was only a little over three years ago that Miss Wendy, the lovely owner at Cozy Creek Christmas decided she needed to hire a Production Manag...errr, little Siberian Forest kitten (hehe).

Now three years later and I've overseen and approved hundreds (yes, HUNDREDS I tell you) of wonderful snowmen, Santas, pictures, and all kinds of wonderful primitive Christmas folk art.  But at least I get all the treats and Fancy Feast I want.  And the benefits package is wonderful, especially the love from Mommy!!!

Snowmen?!?! Doesn't LOOK Like The First Day Of Summer!!!

Well the calendar might read June 21st, the First official day of summer,  but way up here
above the arctic circle, as we look out the window we can see the snowmen are waiting for
another blizzard to blow in!
Didn't somebody once say "Why can't every day be like Christmas!?"
Well.. up here IT IS!

Up here near Santa's workshop, we have for sale today a lovely
hand-crafted wood framed window painting!
This whimsical scene looks out upon Mr and Mrs Snowman
as they remark on how Christmas is only a short six months away!
The lucky purchaser of this one-of-a-kind piece of artwork will surely feel
that warm Christmas glow (as well as the irrational urge for hot cocoa
with marshmallows in late June! :-) )
Painting is 17" x 17" and can be hung or can sit on a shelf or fireplace mantle.
Available on my Etsy shop, link below!
